What is a HVLP Paint Sprayer?

A high volume low pressure (HVLP) paint sprayer is an air-operated tool that sprays paint with less force than other tools. This means you can apply more coats of paint without damaging the surface underneath, which saves time and money. It also creates an even finish that dries quickly, so you don't have to wait long before moving on to your next task.

An HVLP system uses gravity instead of compressed air for better control over the amount of fluid being sprayed. The result is a smooth finish with no "orange peel" effect or unsightly brush marks left behind by some conventional tools like brushes and rollers. You'll be able to get better coverage in fewer layers, meaning your project will go faster while using less material overall!

Benefits of using an HVLP Paint Sprayer For Lacquer Spray Painting

HVLP sprayers are a good way to save your lacquer from damage by paint. In addition, you can also protect yourself from the harmful effects of lacquer aerosol . Plus this method will be much faster than applying lacquer by hand or with a brush. The application time will go down considerably and this means less supplies. This also means less money you have to spend on lacquer products for your project!

An HVLP paint sprayer will give you great control over how your finished lacquer is applied. You can lightly coat to make the lacquer easier to apply or build up the coating for a more durable finish. This gives you better flexibility when dealing with delicate surfaces too!

It should be easy to clean up after painting your lacquer. You won't have to worry about getting any stains or paint on your skin, clothes, or in the air either! This is great news for lacquer spray painters who are typically exposed to harmful chemicals during normal use.

By using an HVLP sprayer you can apply more lacquer with less thinning than needed. This is great for keeping your work environment clean and healthy. You can even buy lacquer in bulk if you like to save money on supplies!

So, this method is faster than using a brush (or traditional spray gun) when applying lacquer by hand. Plus, it will produce less overspray when painting large surfaces too! It's also easier to control the flow of lacquer with an HVLP sprayer which makes it ideal for tricky surfaces like curved wood or metal.

Things to consider before purchase HVLP Paint Sprayer for Lacquer

You need an HVLP sprayer for your lacquer painting project! This guide will show you how to choose the best HVLP paint sprayer for your needs. We'll go over what makes an HVLP different from other types of sprayers, how to select the right model based on your budget and project requirements, how to use it properly, and more!

1. Your Project Requirements - What are you spraying?

When selecting an HVLP paint sprayer, you need to consider the type of project you're working on and what materials you'll be using. There are many different types of sprayers for many different purposes so it's important that you get the right type of paint sprayer for the project at hand.

Lacquer, primer, and sealer are all very common materials that an HVLP paint sprayer works well with.

If you're looking for a multi-purpose paint sprayer we recommend the PNTGREEN HVLP Spray Gun. It can be used to spray lacquer, primer, and sealer as well as enamel and oil-based paints. We love this paint sprayer for its ease of use and durability.

A project like staining a fence or painting the interior of your house would be better suited to an HVLP paint sprayer which can apply an even coat without leaving behind brush marks. For these types of projects we recommend the Fuji 2203G Semi-PRO 2 Spray Gun.

2. Your Budget - How much can you spend?

The price range for HVLP paint sprayers starts at around $60 and goes up to several hundred dollars for more advanced models.

You can find great deals on HVLP paint sprayers online if you're willing to do some digging. However, we recommend that you purchase your sprayer from a reputable dealer like Amazon or eBay who offers a return policy in case the product doesn't meet your expectations.

3. The size and type of your project

The size and type of your project determine the best sprayer for you to use. This is an important factor because if you select a sprayer that's too heavy duty you will only frustrate yourself with its weight and lack of control while trying to paint delicate surfaces like furniture or cabinets.

If you're working on something like painting a deck, fence, porch, or other wooden surfaces we recommend the PNTGREEN HVLP Spray Gun. It's our top pick for this type of project thanks to its lightweight but durable construction and ease of use.

If you're looking for an all-purpose paint sprayer that can be used for smaller and bigger jobs we recommend the Fuji 2203G Semi-PRO 2. This HVLP paint sprayer is highly versatile from staining furniture or cabinets to painting a house or fence.

How to use an HVLP paint sprayer?

Before you start spraying it's important to set up your paint sprayer. Most HVLP paint sprayers come with a manual that should guide you through the process of assembling and using your new tool. However, we've included some helpful hints for getting started below:

1) Prepare your work area

Make sure to find a well-ventilated area away from small children or pets to set up your HVLP paint sprayer. You need to have enough room to move around comfortably while you're painting.

2) Assemble the spray gun

Follow the instructions provided with your HVLP paint sprayer to assemble the spray gun. Once it's properly assembled, attach it to your compressor hose using an air coupler or quick connector.

3) Prepare your paint

If you're using a gravity feed sprayer, pour the paint into the paint cup and close it to avoid spilling or dripping as you move around your work area. If you're using a suction feed sprayer simply place the container on top of the suction tube.

4) Adjust your psi settings

Now, you need to adjust your psi settings on the spray gun according to the viscosity of the paint. If you're using a lacquer or primer, set your psi at 8-12 psi. For an oil-based paint set it at 15-20 psi while for enamel increase it to 30-40 psi.

5) Adjust your spray pattern

Adjust the nozzle on your paint gun or spray to control the width and projection of the paint. Start with a fan-type pattern and narrow it down if needed.

6) Start spraying!

Start spraying after you've made all necessary adjustments. Holding the gun at approximately 30° to 45° angle; apply pressure on the trigger while keeping your free hand behind the spray tip to avoid getting paint on your fingers.

Pro Tip: Don't forget to practice makes perfect!

The best way to get used to using an HVLP paint sprayer is by practicing. It might seem like a tedious process, but it will pay off in the end when you can quickly and accurately complete your painting project.

It is especially important that you practice how to properly clean the spray gun after you're finished using it as this will save you time and effort when you need to reload paint into your tool.

FAQs about HVLP paint sprayers for lacquer

Q1. How do you thin lacquer for HVLP?

My favorite way to thin a lacquer for HVLP spray guns is to stand the quart near my compressor and shoot air through it with a blowgun until it's spraying correctly at about 30 psi. You can set up a household fan next to your compressor to speed the process up, if you prefer.

If the quart has been sitting in my shop for a while and is thickening I might add some thinner to it but that's not necessary every time. Just remember: don't over thin! Thinning too much will make it spray like water.

Q2. Should you sand before lacquer?

Generally, no. If you are working with a surface like bare wood or previously painted surfaces you may want to sand before applying your first coat of lacquer but again, most new finishes -- even if they claim to need some kind of pre-finishing can be applied directly over one another without issue. So while some light sanding may help your lacquer to dry faster, it's not required.

Q3. How many coats of lacquer should I apply to wood?

Usually, at least two coats of lacquer is enough to protect a wood surface. However, many people apply three or more coats because it adds a smoothness and shine to the finish that they really like. Three to five coats can be applied in a single day but if you plan on doing more than that I'd suggest letting the lacquer sit for a few days before applying another coat.
If you do apply more than five coats in a day, let it sit overnight and then sand the next day with 400-grit sandpaper. The sanding will smooth out any small ridges and allow you to apply another coat or two over the course of that weekend.

Tip: If you want to apply several coats in a day and find that your lacquer is drying too quickly, try thinning it out with some lacquer thinner mixed into your spray mixture. You may need to reduce the amount of thinner or add more lacquer to get the right mix but this will slow down the dry time and allow you to lay down more than one coat.

Q4. How do I get a smooth finish with HVLP sprayer?

Getting a smooth finish is largely dependent on your technique and the amount of air pressure you use. If your air pressure is too low it will cause the lacquer spray to 'spider web' as it's drying which results in an uneven surface that looks like a mess. Too much pressure will cause the spray to leave a heavier coat which is also undesirable as it creates an almost pebbled finish instead of a smooth one.

The simplest way to control the amount of air pressure you use is with your finger on the trigger - if you can easily hold down your gun's trigger without fatigue then your air pressure is probably low enough to lay down a nice coat of lacquer with smooth results. If you find that holding the trigger for longer than a few seconds at a time is difficult or that it is requiring so much effort that your hand starts to cramp/shake, you are using too much air pressure and will need to make necessary adjustments.

Q5. How much pressure does a HVLP gun need?

Typically, you'll require between 15 and 20 psi. It's critical that the paint can reach a minimum of 15 psi at idle for the gun to atomize it correctly. The finish will glop on your work if this isn't satisfied.
